A media mission

John Gaither needed an extra pair of hands. So I volunteered mine.

John's our film and video guru here at Keynote, and as such, he's part of our media team. He recently got a request from the Boyd Family Band to record, asking if we could record a performance they were doing at a local church this past Sunday. They're wanting to put together a few new promotional materials, and thought making an up-to-date video of them performing would be cool. We agreed.

Well, it turned out that John wanted to have two cameras recording the event so he could have a variety of footage to choose from, but Mel Sanders, another guy on our media crew, who would normally help out, couldn't be there on Sunday. So that's where I came in...

Thursday, February 7
I go with Mel to East 91st Christian Church with our recording equipment to be there for the Boyd's sound check and run-through. They were planning on rehearsing that afternoon, so we took advantage of the opportunity to do a "run-through" ourselves.

I get a good look at the room where they are playing and learn how to set up the sound equipment to record on Sunday. I watch as Mel hooks up cords to cords, cords to mixers, and mixers to computers. Honestly, I was pretty intimidated by it all, but it ended up being not as complicated as I thought. Mel shows me the ropes, how to hook it all up and record on the computer, and we listen to the Boyd's (who sounded fantastic!) then pack up and go back to the office.

Friday, February 8
John and I talk about how we're going to approach the project. We'll set up the sound recording equipment in the back, then off we'll go with our cameras. John wants to roam on and around the stage getting unique angles and close-ups while I roam out in the audience getting master shots. Sounds fine to me.

Sunday, February 10
John picks me up at 9:30 and we're off to the church. (The church is enormous, by the way. Big enough to be able to have a rock band play in one hall, a church service go on in the sanctuary, sunday school classes spread out everywhere in between, and not have any of them interfere with one another! I could have gotten lost in there.)

We set up the sound equipment, just like Mel had shown me, do a quick sound check, and grab our cameras. With about 100 youth there (give or take), the Boyd's play four songs and one of their boys gives a short testimony to kick-off the high-school aged youth service their church has - a really cool idea, if you ask me! I roam in the back and amongst the students in the crowd while John takes his camera up front, and we got some pretty decent footage! Here's a couple pictures of their performance:

Now...
John and Mel will be sorting out the footage and sound clips in the coming weeks to try and piece together a cool promo video for the Boyds. I'm excited to see what they come up with, and I'll be sure to show you how it looks in the end! In the meantime, though, I've gotta get back to work on the websites I'm working on. I'll have something to show you soon! That's all for now...
